In september 2010, our operating theatres embarked on a project which involved switching their clinical waste bags from yellow incineration bags to orange bags and substantially increasing the amount of waste for recycling.Not all clinical waste needs to be incinerated a large proportion can be disposed of into orange bags and autoclaved instead, substantially reducing energy usage and costs.

Pandora Charms UK to examine exactly what was thrown away into black bags to landfill.Every single item disposed of into black bags was assessed for its potential to be recycled.Discussions were also held with luke champion(Environment and sustainability manager)To ensure theatre staff were provided with internal recycling bins that would be fit for purpose.This work has resulted in a huge increase in the amount of waste sent for recycling and the subsequent drop in the amount of waste sent to landfill.At least 200kg per week extra of waste from theatres is now recycled.
